Portable Skills Program – Tourism

This Skills package consists of the following 3 programmes:

A. Tourist Guide Training Programme and Tour Operator.
B. Tour Operator Programme
C. First Aid Level 1

 

A. Tourist Guide – CULTURE GUIDE

A Culture Guide is a person that conducts extensive tours with an emphasis on cultural wealth, both to enlighten and entertain visitors. These guides are very well informed about the history of the different sites that are scattered throughout the provinces of South Africa and have a good overview of the diverse cultural elements of our country. A Culture Guide can operate in one province or qualify to work as a competent guide in numerous provinces or apply themselves to qualify as a National Guide.

Drum Beat Academy offers a CATHSSETA accredited Cultural Guide qualification. This course will enhance your skills as a guide and enable you to find work as a tourist guide in your chosen provinces. This course will let you travel throughout South Africa exploring and sharing our country with paying customers both local and international. Once qualified a Culture Guide can easily move between the provinces he/she is qualified for.

Course Content:

Theory:

  • Introduction to the learning programme
  • Working in the tourist industry
  • Knowledge on SA, Provinces, Sites, Nature, Biomes and Cultures
  • Design & conduct a guided experience
  • And many more

Practical:

  • Conducting a guided cultural tour
  • Provide customer service
  • Demonstrate ability to handle problems

Entrance requirements:

  • Learners should have two South African languages on matric level or equivalent.
  • Reading, writing and basic mathematical skills are required.

 

B.     Tour Operator Programme

Course Content:

Module 1

  • How to start and manage a small tour operator business.

Module 2

  • Legal implications: Drivers licence, P.D.P, R.T.P, C.O.F, Pax Liability
  • Marketing in the tourism industry: Different sectors
  • Technical management: Services, tyres, fuel/oil
  • Itinerary: Designing a guided experience

Module 3

  • Itinerary: Designing a guided experience
  • Infra structure: Your office, staff
  • Product knowledge: Accommodation (STO and rack rates, single supplement)
  • Programmes and quotes
  • Administration: Reservations, confirmations, vouchers, payments, cancellations, filing
  • Guides: Qualifications, personality and appearance, tour preparations file, payment to your guide/s, loyalty to your guide/s

 

C.     First Aid Level 1

First Aid Level 1 training is for persons required to assess the emergency situation, to provide basic life support and basic First Aid in order to stabilise patients prior to the arrival of Emergency Services. People that have undergone First Aid Level 1 training will be able to: demonstrate an understanding of emergency scene management, demonstrate an understanding of elementary anatomy and physiology, assess an emergency situation, apply First Aid procedures to a life-threatening situation and treat common injuries.

Portable Skills Programme Duration:

  • Contact period for Tourist Guiding training is 5 days, the learner is required to prepare for a practical weekend.
    • On completion of the practical weekend, the learner is required to successfully complete a portfolio of evidence.
    • During this period of portfolio building additional contact time is available for guidance and assistance.
  • Contact period for Tour Operator Programme is 5 days
  • Contact period for the First Aid Level 1 is 2 days
  • Total duration of the course is approximately 3 months, dependent on learner’s progress.

Assessment:

  • Practical assessment on Conducting a Guided Experience.
  • Questionnaires on theory and information cards.
  • Designed itinerary.

Award:

  • Drum Beat Academy and CATHSSETA Certificate for Tourist Guiding Programme
  • Drum Beat Academy Certificate for Tour Operator Programme
  • First Aid Level 1 Certificate.

Cost:

Total Cost for the above Portable Skill Programme is R14 950
